چکیده

We observed the HH24-26 region in the L1630 Orion molecular cloud complex with the X-ray observatory ASCA in the 0.5−10 keV band. X-ray emission was detected from the T Tauri star SSV61 and from the region where the Class I protostars SSV63E and SSV63W are located (hereafter SSV63E+W). The spectra of both SSV63E+W and SSV61 are well explained by an optically thin thermal plasma model. The spectrum of the T Tauri star SSV61 has a low temperature of kT = 0.9 (0.7−1.2) keV and a moderate absorption of NH = 1.3 (0.9−1.7) ×1022 cm−2, while that of the protostar SSV63E+W has a high temperature of kT = 5.0 (3.3−7.9) keV and a heavy absorption of NH = 1.5 (1.2−1.8) ×1023 cm−2. The X-ray light curve of SSV63E+W showed a flare during the observation. The peak flux reached about 9 times that of the quiescent flux. The temperature and the absorption column density do not change conspicuously during the flare. The 0.5−10 keV luminosity of SSV63E+W was about 1 × 10 erg s−1 in the quiescent state. The present detection of hard X-rays from SSV63E+W is remarkable, because this is the first X-ray detection of a protostar in Orion. Subject headings: stars: flare—stars: formation—stars: individual (SSV61, SSV63E+W)—stars: pre-main sequence—X-rays: stars

Deep near Infrared Observations of the X-ray Emitting Class 0 Protostar Candidates in the Orion Molecular Cloud-3

We obtained near infrared (NIR) imaging with the Subaru Telescope of the class 0 protostar candidates in the Orion Molecular Cloud-3, two of which were discovered to have X-ray emission by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We found strong evidence for the class 0 nature of the X-ray sources. First, our deep K -band image shows no emission brighter than 19.6 mag from both of these X-ray sources. Si...

Discovery of X Rays from Class 0 Protostar Candidates in Omc-3

We have observed the Orion Molecular Clouds 2 and 3 (OMC-2 and OMC-3) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The northern part of OMC-3 is found to be particularly rich in new X-ray features; four hard X-ray sources are located in and along the filament of cloud cores. Two sources coincide positionally with the submm-mm dust condensations of MMS 2 and 3 or an outflow radio source VLA 1, whic...

ROSAT-HRI detection of the Class I protostar YLW16A in the ρ Ophiuchi dark cloud

I analyze unpublished or partially published archival ROSAT data of the ρ Ophiuchi dark cloud. This set of seven overlapping ROSAT HRI pointings, composed of eight ∼one-hour exposures, detects mainly the X-ray brightest T Tauri stars of this star-forming region. Only two HRI sources are new X-ray sources, and their optical counterparts are proposed as new Weak T Tauri star candidates. Meanwhile...

Turmoil in Orion: The Nearest Massive Protostar

I discuss different theories of massive star formation: formation from massive cores, competitive Bondi-Hoyle accretion, and protostellar collisions. I summarize basic features of the Turbulent Core Model (TCM). I then introduce the Orion Kleinmann-Low (KL) region, embedded in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) and one of the nearest regions of massive star formation. The KL region contains three p...

The “ ∫ -shaped filament” of the Orion A giant molecular cloud was mapped in N2H + J = 1→0, and its northern end, the OMC-2/3 region was observed also in HC3N J = 5→4 and CCS JN = 43 → 32 and 76 → 65. The results are compared with maps of other molecular lines and the dust continuum emission. The N2H + distribution is similar to the dust continuum distribution, except for the central part of th...
